National Wildlife Week
March 16-20,2009

This is a wonderful reason not to do chores this weekend and go outside and play instead!
“Since 1938, National Wildlife Week has been essential to wildlife conservation, bringing awareness about the issue to people of ALL ages. Observing Nation Wildlife Week is a time to honor wildlife, bring communities together through service, ignite the minds of children and adults, and instill an absolute love for nature. “
How can you participate?
An easy and free way to get involved in this week-long event is by making time for outdoor play and interaction with the natural world. Nation Wildlife Federation has activities and game ideas, Colorado wildlife watch lists of local plants and animals, environmental service project ideas, and fact sheets about the benefits of playing outside.
Here are a few ideas that may help you to get outside in Colorado Springs:

Street Scene
A Broadway Opera

Colorado Springs’ Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts brings Kurt Weill’s Tony Award winning Street Scene to life! This exciting play is a mix of Opera, Musical Theatre, and Jazz. The play is about the joys, hopes and sorrows of Depression-Era tenement dwellers in New York City.
What makes this even better? I have the privilege of knowing one of the cast members! Elan will give us an “insiders view” of Colorado Springs’ Arts and Culture and tell us more about Street Scene. After asking Elan a few questions, here is what he had to say…

” I have been involved in the Arts since I moved to Colorado Springs ten years ago.
The Arts community here has definitely grown and continues to grow today. Organizations such as the Fine Arts Center, Opera Theatre of the Rockies, and Imagination Celebration help build on Colorado Springs’ Art and Culture. The artistic talent is very abundant in Colorado Springs.
As a Colorado College graduate, I have performed with Colorado Jazz Dance Company, now known as Indigo Dance Colorado, and Opera Theatre of the Rockies. I’ve also performed in three musicals, sung at special concerts, and performed with a couple of ensembles. Recently I have gotten involved with Opera Theatre of the Rockies again in the production of Kurt Weil’s Street Scene.
Street Scene has been a wonderful experience for me this year. The cast is amazing, kind, friendly and full of talent and professionalism.
The genre of Opera has never been my favorite, but this opera has elements of musical theatre, which is where I want to focus my performance career. There are dance numbers and fun up-beat swing-like music, along with a children ensemble and playful scenes.
Many of the songs and music is broken up by dialogue, which is not typical of an opera. It really brings in focus on the characters, and you get to know them very well by the end of the show.
I play the role of Willie Maurrant; the son of Anna and Frank, and one of the older kids on the street. I also play a friend of Mae Jones who is a dancer that comes on for a big dance number with Mae and Dick McGann. The show is going to be brilliant and very enjoyable for anyone to come and see.
Of course there is always drama and some tear jerker moments, but what’s an opera without all that.”
I hope those of you who love Colorado Springs’ Arts and Culture can make this event! As always, before you bring the kids make sure it is age appropriate.

”Happenings in the Springs”

Bear Creek Dog Park
One of my favorite parks in Colorado Springs! Bear Creek Dog Park is an off-leash, voice-command park for Dogs and of course their owners. Though I would have to say that the Dogs are running the show!
Folks in Colorado Springs bring their Dogs here 365 days a year come rain, snow, or shine. It has 25 acres of fun and even has a special area for small Dogs (not all can hang with the big Dogs ya know). The main trail is three quarters of a mile long and loops around the park. The fun part is that Bear Creek runs through the park so the Dogs can romp around and get wet! There are bag dispensers for not so pleasant items Dogs leave lying around, trashcans, resting places, and picnic tables.
Remember! This is an off-leash, voice command-park, so your Dog needs to be well behaved. Visit the park, socialize and see how people really do kind of look like their Dogs!

For the Love of Dogs
I spoke with Roxanna Breitigan, Animal Care Manager for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo; This Sunday, February 15th, from 10am-3pm she will be at Bear Creek Dog Park asking for donations in exchange for homemade Dog Biscuits. All donations will go to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for African Wild Dog Conservation. This is a great way to have fun and get involved in the Colorado Springs community.
Bear Creek Dog Park is located on the West Side of Colorado Springs. Take Highway 24 West to 21st Street and turn Left. Stay on 21st and just past Lower Gold Camp Rd., the Dog Park will be on your Right. Have Fun!
