National Wildlife Week
March 16-20,2009

This is a wonderful reason not to do chores this weekend and go outside and play instead!
“Since 1938, National Wildlife Week has been essential to wildlife conservation, bringing awareness about the issue to people of ALL ages. Observing Nation Wildlife Week is a time to honor wildlife, bring communities together through service, ignite the minds of children and adults, and instill an absolute love for nature. “
How can you participate?
An easy and free way to get involved in this week-long event is by making time for outdoor play and interaction with the natural world. Nation Wildlife Federation has activities and game ideas, Colorado wildlife watch lists of local plants and animals, environmental service project ideas, and fact sheets about the benefits of playing outside.
Here are a few ideas that may help you to get outside in Colorado Springs:

”Happenings in the Springs”

Bear Creek Dog Park
One of my favorite parks in Colorado Springs! Bear Creek Dog Park is an off-leash, voice-command park for Dogs and of course their owners. Though I would have to say that the Dogs are running the show!
Folks in Colorado Springs bring their Dogs here 365 days a year come rain, snow, or shine. It has 25 acres of fun and even has a special area for small Dogs (not all can hang with the big Dogs ya know). The main trail is three quarters of a mile long and loops around the park. The fun part is that Bear Creek runs through the park so the Dogs can romp around and get wet! There are bag dispensers for not so pleasant items Dogs leave lying around, trashcans, resting places, and picnic tables.
Remember! This is an off-leash, voice command-park, so your Dog needs to be well behaved. Visit the park, socialize and see how people really do kind of look like their Dogs!

For the Love of Dogs
I spoke with Roxanna Breitigan, Animal Care Manager for Cheyenne Mountain Zoo; This Sunday, February 15th, from 10am-3pm she will be at Bear Creek Dog Park asking for donations in exchange for homemade Dog Biscuits. All donations will go to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for African Wild Dog Conservation. This is a great way to have fun and get involved in the Colorado Springs community.
Bear Creek Dog Park is located on the West Side of Colorado Springs. Take Highway 24 West to 21st Street and turn Left. Stay on 21st and just past Lower Gold Camp Rd., the Dog Park will be on your Right. Have Fun!
