About Peterson Air Force Base (Peterson AFB)
Peterson AFB traces its roots to the Colorado Springs Army Air Base, established on 28 April 1942 at the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport which had been in operation since 1926. The base carried out photo reconnaissance training under the auspices of the Photo Reconnaissance Operational Training Unit (PROTU). On 22 June 1942 Colorado Springs Army Air Base was assigned to the 2d Air Force, headquartered at Fort George Wright, Washington.
About Schriever Air Force Base (Schriever AFB)
The history of Schriever AFB goes back to the decision to establish a new space control facility approved by the Secretary of Defense in September 1979. The site, formerly known as Falcon Air Station, was chosen from 12 possible sites and ground breaking took place in May 1983. On June 5, 1998, Falcon Air Station was renamed Schriever Air Force Base in honor of retired General Bernard A. Schriever, who pioneered the development of the nation's ballistic missile programs and is recognized as "the father of the United States Air Force's space and missile program."
About Fort Carson
Fort Carson, the Mountain Post, is an Army post located southwest of Colorado Springs, between Interstate 25 and Highway 115. This post is recognized as one of the world's premier locations to lead, train, and maintain while preparing soldiers to win on the battlefield. This proud team fosters personal and professional growth by providing a command climate that attracts, develops, and retains quality people. In 1999, the 7th Infantry Division (Light) was reactivated at Fort Carson. It is the first Active component-Reserve component Army division. The three enhanced separate brigades of the division are made up of units from Oregon, Arkansas and Oklahoma National Guard. Headquartered at Fort Carson, the units remain in their relative states, training for deployment.
About the United States Air Force Academy
The idea surfaced almost six decades ago, but did not become a reality until April 1, 1954, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill establishing the U.S. Air Force Academy. Many of America's pioneer airmen advocated the creation of an academy to prepare officers especially for the air service. One of them, Brig. Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell, tried in vain to persuade first, the government, then, private interests to establish such a school.
